About The CPD Course

This document is more than the learning material of the course The Fundamentals of Adult Education. It can also stand alone as a reference and a source for people interested in the field of adult education, whether personal or professional (human resources professionals, training department professionals, training design and development professionals), for trainers who design and implement training courses, for students as reading material or a source for assignments. The pages that follow constitute a journey through adult education, introducing the complexities, challenges and rewards that come with it. In brief, this learning material can be used for the personal benefit of trainers, to further develop their practice, as well as enrich their existing knowledge. It can even constitute a source of valuable training material for trainers of trainers. Our own research and experience, as well as that of other researchers related to the field of adult education, have shown that adult trainers lack or have limited knowledge on or limited understanding of, the theory of adult education. As we strongly believe that theory sets the foundation for successful adult education, we have designed this course to emphasize the importance of theory and showcase the benefits that can be gained through its incorporation in training practices. As adult trainers and lifelong adult learners ourselves, we feel it is important to address and attempt to cover this skills gap; the lack or limited knowledge or limited understanding of the theory of adult education. It is a well-known fact that theory is the foundation behind each practice and without it, any practice is incomplete. This also holds true in the case of adult education theories. Once theory is understood and its true meaning is reflected on and conquered, then connections can be identified within one's own knowledge, experiences, and practices. That is when transformation takes place and the new knowledge gained through theory can be incorporated in training practices, resulting in applied learning, which in turn brings progress and development. In the case of adult education, theory results in improved skills and opens the mind to new directions in designing courses and approaches in implementing learning, where the adult learner is at the core of the learning process.
